Happy Father’s Day

We had a friend ask us the other day why there was such a holiday as Father’s Day. We had no idea, so we did some research and found out where it all started. It all started with a wonderful daughter named Sonora Dodd, of Washington. She was sitting in on a sermon for Mother’s Day and decided that she wanted to have a day to honor her father.

Her father, William Smart, was a Civil War veteran. He became a widower when his wife gave birth to their sixth child. He was then left to raise the newborn and his five other children on a rural farm in eastern Washington State.

Later on in life Sonora realized the selflessness her father had in raising his children as a single parent. It was her father that made all of the normal parental sacrifices and was, in her eyes, a courageous, selfless, and loving man. William Smart was born in June, so she decided to hold the first Father’s Day celebration in Spokane, Washington on the 19th of June, 1910.

President Calvin Coolidge, in 1924, supported the idea of a national Father’s Day. Then in 1966, President Lyndon Johnson signed a presidential proclamation declaring the 3rd Sunday of June as Father’s Day.

As for us, we are grateful for all of the fathers who, like Mr. Smart, have quietly and selflessly taken care of their family. We would like to wish you a very happy Father’s Day.
